Joe Stoiber

Hello Runners! My name is Joe Stoiber, and I am the Co-Director for the Galloway Program here in Chicago. This is my sixth year with Galloway and my fourth year assisting Kaye.
I am very excited to participate again as a Pace Group Leader. I really enjoyed my first year running with Galloway back in 2003, but I think it may may be even more fun helping out those new runners cross the finish line in their very first marathon. I feel the journey is just as enjoyable as reaching our goal. I have met some of my best friends through this program and hope you will do the same.
I have complete eight marathons. I have run Chicago (2), Dayton, Ohio Air Force (2), Minneapolis - Twin Cities, San Diego - Rock-N- Roll, Milwaukee and Paris. My most memorable marathon was my first. I completed the Air Force Marathon with four other friends in 4:59:19. That was a full 41 seconds better than our 5 hour goal.
I am the owner of a software training/consulting business. I love all sports. I am a huge Cubs fan that always believes that this is our year. Oh yes, I love running.
See you on the trails.
Happy Running!
Joe

This will be my 16th year or there about's of training with the Galloway system. The first year I ran a marathon, I had trained on my own, listening to my body and making my own rules. The next year I found a flyer that said "You can run a marathon in 6 months". I thought Holy Cow, you mean people actually have training programs for this. I joined and found that Galloway's program was very similar to the program I had developed on my own, but his was better. That was 50 marathons ago, 14 of them being the Chicago Marathon. I am currently on my 26th state in an attempt to cover all 50. The best experience was in Grand Rapids, Michigan where I combined it with a weekend camping trip. The flattest was Mardi Gras in New Orleans, the most scenic was the Marine Corps in Washington DC, fastest was at Tucson Arizona where they bussed us up a mountain and told us to run down. After a little knee surgery put running out of the picture, I am continuing marathons by walking. I throughly enjoy helping others run (or walk) their first marathon and sharing their joy when they see what they are capable of.
I work as a self-employed draftsman, illustrating inventions for patent applications and sometimes I go on the roof of my building for lunch and work sudoku puzzles, and am scheduling an Alaskan fishing trip next year.
MaryJo Schaum
Hello all you crazy runners out there! My name is Mary Jo Schaum & I am the pace group leader for the 1:1 group. I started Galloway about 3 years ago. My plan was to get on a regular workout/running routine & maybe shoot for a 1/2 marathon, but a whole 26.2 miles, that is just crazy. Well, never say never. I have completed 3 marathons since I joined Galloway. I have met so many wonderful people. And, I truly enjoy my Saturday morning runs:) My husband & I have a handsome 10 month old baby boy. I take him with me on my midweek runs in the jogging stroller. He loves to be outside & see all the cars, trucks, people, birds, trees, etc... So I get to spend time w/ him & get in my workout as long as the weather cooperates. :) Good luck to all you runners out there!

To
All My Galloway Friends,
This is my 3rd year as Program Director, and the time has flown by so quickly!
I have learned to so much about you -- your goals, your struggles, but most importantly
the journey you experience every October! My 6 years as Pace Group Leader
gave me the experience to master the process of running the Galloway method.
My all-time favorite marathon would probably be my first. I cried for 2
days. I have completed 6 marathons. In my real life I am a NCLB Title I
Coordinator for Chicago Public Schools. Translation? A very interesting and
rewarding job.
Fun/Interesting Fact? I love to work in my yard and am
active in my church.
Next Goal? To see all our registered runners cross this
year's marathon with a smile!
Sincerely,
Kaye

I started running consistently about 7 years ago when my wife & I joined a "Bootcamp" type workout program. We started doing 5ks and I got hooked. I ran the Chi Half in 2002 (I thought I was going to die after 13.1 miles and couldn't possibly imagine running twice that distance.) In 2003 I joined CARA, trained for and ran my first marathon. In 2005 I heard about the Galloway group from a friend and decided to give it a try. I ran the Chicago Marathon that year faster and much more comfortably that my previous Chi Marathon and that got me hooked on the Galloway program. I've run Chicago four times and last year, 2007, had the opportunity to get in to the Boston Marathon via a charity waiver. I ran for a small charity organization in Boston that had 10 numbers for the race.
Running the Boston Marathon was, without a doubt, the highlight of my running career to date. I couldn't believe that I was running the most historic and prestigious road race in the world. As if just being there wasn't enough, we experienced some of the worst weather conditions in the history of the race - the race organizers came very close to cancelling it due to the heavy rain, winds, and low temps. Fortunately the rain slowed down and I was able to complete the race only 11 min slower than my best marathon time.
I live in Glenview with my wife of 28 years, Judy and have two children, a son, Kevin 23 and a daughter Maggie 21 who ran her first 5K race this past spring. I work in sales for Ridgid Tools.

I began running over 20 years ago in an effort to find a fitness program that worked into my life without having to leave the kids again after coming home from work. So I began running early in the morning while they were sleeping and quickly became completely hooked on running. I have only ran 2 marathons and after training for first one on my own thought it would be much more fun to train with others. I learned about Galloway by overhearing (eavesdropping perhaps) a conversation Kaye was having in the locker room of the gym we belong to.
I would have to say overall my favorite running experiences are running early in the morning in other cities. You get a completely different perspective running through the streets of cities like Philadelphia or the French Quarter in New Orleans as they wake up. Perhaps my most unique running experience was running 13 miles last summer while our group was serenaded by Jeff who sang show tunes the whole way!
After working my whole life mainly in corporate America, I'm now pursuing what I'm truly passionate about, social justice. I'm currently in my second year of graduate school studying sociology with an emphasis on social justice.
